Is the media breaking down or reinforcing stereotypes? How (be specific)?

I don't think it is doing either. I think it is getting the news to the people faster and people are making his or her own decisions about people. I think that the media portrays too much and violence, thus showing people that those options are acceptable! Probably not the answer you wanted, but it is my opinion.
