What was the role of monarchy during the French Revolution?

The monarchy had a huge role in the instigation of the French revolution. The media was not advanced at that time and many people were under the impression that the Royal family were living in opulence and luxury while they were starving. Many people began to blame the Queen (Marie Antoinette) of being an Austrian spy and spending France's riches on herself. One such rumour was the affair of the diamond necklace where two aristocrats faked being the Queen and her attendant in order to purchase the necklace in the Queen's name. This became a huge problem and many people believed that the Queen had embezzled the state out of millions . The Queen had never seen the seller, had never paid for the necklace and what's more had refused the gift on the grounds that the people of France were starving. There was also the made up ''let them eat cake'' statement, where the Queen is said to have responded to her servant saying ''Ma'am the people are starving'' with that statement. It turns out a Queen who lived 200 years before said that and not Marie Antoinette. The Royal family became a consitutional monarchy in 1791 and the King went from being King of France to King of the French (the idea of a popular monarchy). The nation still feared the threat invasion from abroad and there were a series of wars to prevent this from happening. The Royal family fled to Varennes, where they were captured and guilotined marking a huge success of the French revlution.
