Can somebody explain the French Mandate?

I have a project to do and I need to explain the French Mandate. I've tried to look it up but I can't understand a thing. I know there is one for Syria and Lebanon so just give me both. If you can help me thank you so much and please try your best to make it as clear as possible(:
