Does fruit affect dogs in a bad way?

The other day I had an apple and when the phone rang I set it down on the coffee table and when I came back the puppy was chewing on it on the floor and had reduced it to a measley scrap. I want to know if fruit is bad for dogs, not that I plan to feed him any just to know if I should be more wary of where I place things.
