What is wrong with my vacuum cleaner and can it be fixed easily/cheaply?

It is a Hoover upright and after so long it cuts out...if you leave it it comes back on!!! I've checked the fault finder in the manual and it hasn't helped...I'm uming it's overheating for some reason and I've lost my guarantee!!!
